Dwarka Expressway which is expected to provide another link between Delhi and Gurgaon is being constructed in five packages. Package 3 which initiates from the Delhi-Haryana border and continues till Basai rail overbridge includes an elevated highway which will be on a single pillar support. The project is rapidly being constructed along with Sector 109 and 110. Four laning has been completed at separate locations, Basai rail overbridge, and Gurgaon-Delhi border. Eight laning is underway at pillar 74 towards the Delhi side. generally, there are 14 segments between 2 pillars about 40m apart. By month-end, another eight laning is expected to be completed.

What makes this special is that it is the first time eight-lanes are being constructed on a single pillar. Previously four-lane and six-lane projects have been constructed on a single pillar. The technique is economical as well as makes optimum use of land resources while leaving an option for future expansion open. Since only 1 pillar is being used instead of 2 or 3, considerable land space is saved. Additionally, it is time-saving and cost-effective too without compromising on the strength. Since this is a unique technology, it has attracted immense interest.

The 8.5 kmBasai-Delhi border stretch of Package 3 will be elevated with elevated service roads. Innovative technologies like Intelligent Transport System (ITS) which will display important traffic information including CCTV cameras, vehicular pressure, etc. The project would also help reduce the traffic conflicts which cause extensive traffic jams in this region. NH-8 and other arterial roads often face this issue which becomes a safety hazard. There will be elevated service roads at some junctions while underpass at important places like Basai, Bajghera, and Gurgaon-Delhi border, etc. will be provided for smoother passage of vehicles.

The package is nearly 40% complete and is expected to be complete by March 2021 and will have unique innovations like elastomeric bearings that are being imported from Malaysia. They will be placed between the pillar and the carriageway and will help absorb the load and ensure the flexibility of the structure. These bearings are excellent in terms of performance while being economical too. The 14 segments between the two pillars will be held by cables to provide strength to the structure. The segments will be held together via duct cables passing through holes. A strength-based load analysishas been done to ensure safety. Post-testing will also be done to ensure strength and longevity.
