In a significant move to enhance road safety, Deputy Commissioner Nishant Yadav has issued directives to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to temporarily close off all access points to the Dwarka Expressway until its completion. This decision comes in the wake of a tragic accident that claimed the life of a 56-year-old woman from Delhi and left five others injured due to a head-on collision caused by a vehicle driving on the wrong side of the expressway. Deputy Commissioner Nishant Yadav aims to ensure the completion of the 18.9km stretch falling within the city by June 15, after which it will be accessible to the public.

Enhancing Safety Measures

Inspection of the Expressway: Deputy Commissioner Nishant Yadav, accompanied by senior officials from NHAI and GMDA, recently conducted a thorough inspection of the expressway section from the cloverleaf near Kherki Daula toll plaza to Bajghera. This visit allowed them to assess the ongoing work and identify crucial areas for improvement.

Barricading Access Points: To prevent unauthorized traffic movement and enhance safety, NHAI has been instructed to install three layers of barricades, effectively barring access to the expressway until its completion. These measures aim to minimize the risks associated with unregulated traffic flow.

Prioritizing Road Safety: Deputy Commissioner Nishant Yadav emphasized the importance of addressing all road safety aspects before opening the expressway to the public. He cautioned against the use of the Central Peripheral Road, which is a portion of the expressway currently being utilized by some commuters. However, it remains unsafe and unregulated, as the main carriageway is not yet operational. Nishant Yadav urged people not to compromise their safety by driving on the wrong side of the road.

Progress and Milestones

City Portion Completion: The finishing stages of the city portion are well underway, and it is expected to be ready for public use by June 15. The completion of this section will signify a significant milestone in the development of the region’s road infrastructure.

Future Plans: NHAI officials have outlined their expectations for the expressway’s timeline. They anticipate the city portion to become operational by July, while the work on the Delhi region is projected to conclude in 2024. The expressway will be securely barricaded to ensure controlled access and safe commuting.

Pending Land Parcels: Some land parcels are yet to be handed over to NHAI, causing hindrances in the completion of the Kherki Majra underpass and slip road near Bajghera underpass. Deputy Commissioner Nishant Yadav informed that the sub-divisional magistrate is currently examining six pending acquisition cases. Once the process is finalized, the required land will be handed over to facilitate
uninterrupted progress.

Improving Infrastructure and Addressing Concerns

NH-48 Service Lane: Recognizing the poor condition of the NH-48 service lane at Narsinghpur, which experiences heavy traffic due to the non-merger of the Central Peripheral Road with the highway, Deputy Commissioner Nishant Yadav has taken note of the issue. In a recent road safety meeting, he directed NHAI to prioritize resurfacing the service lane before the monsoon season to ensure safer and smoother travel for commuters.
