The Gurugram section of the Dwarka Expressway is scheduled to be inaugurated in June by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue) Anurag Rastogi stated that this particular segment of the expressway is expected to reduce pollution and provide significant relief from traffic congestion on NH-48.

Rastogi, who also serves as the administrative secretary for Gurgaon, recently conducted a review of the ongoing major development projects in Gurugram.

The Gurgaon stretch of the Dwarka Expressway covers 19 km out of the total 29 km, while the remaining 10 km falls within Delhi. Once operational, it is anticipated that approximately 60% of the traffic on NH-48 will be diverted to the expressway, thereby easing congestion on Sohna Road and Golf Course Road, as Rastogi added.

The Dwarka Expressway is a part of the “Golden Quadrilateral,” a highway network that connects Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai. Rastogi also mentioned that it will be linked to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.

Originally announced in 2007, the expressway was initially planned as a circular road connecting Shiv Murti and Kherki Daula in the northern region. In the Haryana section, it is referred to as the Northern Peripheral Road and is being developed as India’s first elevated urban expressway.

The construction of the Gurgaon portion began in November 2019 with an initial completion deadline of 24 months. However, the project has faced numerous setbacks.

These delays are attributed to various factors such as the relocation of utilities, land disputes, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and restrictions on construction during periods of high pollution levels in the National Capital Region (NCR). Additionally, the work on the expressway was suspended for eight months following the collapse of a section near Daultabad Chowk in March 2021.

During the review, Rastogi assessed the progress of various projects related to health, education, and social infrastructure in the city, each with a cost exceeding Rs 25 crore.

Among the upcoming projects in Dwarka Expressway Gurugram, the completion of the Rs 542-crore Sheetla Mata Devi Medical College in Sector 102 is expected by July 2024. Additionally, a 25 MLD sewage treatment plant in Manesar is nearly 40% complete and is projected to be ready by the end of October. The Civil Hospital in Sector 10 is also undergoing upgrades, with plans to increase its capacity from 100 to 200 beds by January 2024.

The new Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) office is slated for completion by September and will require a total cost of Rs 129 crore.

Rastogi directed officials to ensure the timely completion of these projects and encouraged them to promptly report any obstacles they encounter so that the government can address them accordingly.
